New York-based APPARATUS is having a homecoming. After establishing its headquarters in New York City and creating an outpost in Milan, the design studio co-founded by Gabriel Hendifar (a native Angeleno) and Jeremy Anderson is setting down new roots in Hollywood with their third showroom. Los Angeles is also where the pair initially met and conceived APPARATUS’ first pieces seven years ago, so this homecoming feels like a natural step in the studio’s expansion.
Over the past 14 months, the APPARATUS team has been renovating a 5,000 square foot warehouse on McCadden Place in the heart of the city’s design district. Located next to neighbors like JF Chen, Blackman Cruz, Ralph Pucci and Regen Projects, the new showroom stands out with its De Chirico-inspired exteriors since there are no street-facing windows on the exterior, just a singular steel and glass entrance. Instead, natural light streams through the row of clerestory windows 15 feet above the ground, illuminating the raw and transformative space. APPARATUS’ full line of lighting, furniture, and objects, as well as pieces from the JF Chen collection and works by artists Robert Moreland and Amir Nikravan, makes the showroom feel like a refined and elegant living room instead of a typical showroom. Thoughtful details like plaster walls, a mix of fabrics, textures, stones, and greenery only aide in upholding that vision.
