Whilst not as fun as Zumba, or as relaxing as yoga, boxing has been keeping subscribers fit for generations. It requires a high level of athletic ability – strength, speed, agility, hand-eye coordination, just to name a few! If you’re picturing several blows to the face and a couple of black eyes, don’t throw in the towel – this is one sport that will get you into amazing shape and improve your health. Here’s five reasons why…
1. Boosted Cardiovascular Health
You hear it all the time: cardio = fitness. But “doing cardio” doesn’t necessarily mean hopping on a treadmill for 60 minutes each day – because how boring is that?
The whole point of cardio is to place a reasonable amount of stress on your heart and lungs so that they’re challenged enough to make beneficial adaptations to support the higher level of physical activity. As long as you keep your heart rate up during your workout, there’s no reason you can’t punch, kick and jump your way to a healthy heart at your local boxing gym.
2. Strength
All that punching, kicking and jumping needs a surprising amount of strength. Think about it –professional punching bags can weigh up to 50kg. Get ready for the gun show!
3. Improved Hand-Eye Coordination
You may not think about the importance of hand-eye coordination and it’s effect on total health, but it sure plays an important role. Individuals with good hand-eye coordination tend to have better physical coordination as a whole.
When sparring a partner(with padded mitts, of course!), you must be able to see, react and hit the target, all while the target is moving and changing position. Doing this on repeat will keep your instincts sharp and agile.
4. Stress Relief
Struggling with your crazy boss? Going through a bad break-up? The killer combination of released endorphins and punching something with all you’ve got will do serious wonders towards releasing any tension you might be holding no to. Bonus? It’ll do wonders on your ‘revenge body’! Speaking of…
5. Feel good, look good
Boxing is great for improving body composition – and some might say it’s great for weight loss. All the combined lower and upper body work combines muscle-building strength training moves and calorie-burning sessions of cardio. It also works your core, hard giving you a lean, but strong physique.
