This month’s Designer Desktop is a gem…literally. American designer Brenda Houston gives gemstones, fossils and minerals the attention they deserve in her line of contemporary tables, lighting and decorative accessories. She sources her minerals from around the world (some of them are more than 100 years old!) and she lets their interiors dictate the design of her pieces by looking at their veining, marbling and silhouettes. After all, who produces better design than nature herself? Gemstones have been highly prized since ancient times and that’s not changing in modern times.
On the juxtaposition of rugged exteriors and glittering interiors of the stones, Brenda says:
You never know exactly what to expect before a rock is sliced open; it’s a surprise every time. Only after cutting it do you know if there is beauty inside; a door magically opening to a whole new world.
Malachite, known for its use as a protective talisman, takes center stage in these desktop wallpapers and is paired with a perfectly fitting quote from Frank Lloyd Wright.
