While we’ve featured a couple of happy habitat’s throws in previous roundups, we haven’t delved into the Kansas City brand founded close to eight years ago by Karrie Dean. After being laid off from an advertising job, Dean dusted off her art degree and got busy sketching ideas for a collection of blankets. Blankets seemed like the obvious choice as they’re oversized pieces of art designed to make people cozy and happy, whether it’s being used while curled up on a sofa or folded up on a shelf. Each begins as a blank canvas that Dean fills with geometric patterns and inviting colorways that are designed to feel just as good as they look.
Dean partners with U.S.-based knitters and ethically produces each blanket with recycled cotton, hand-dyed linen, American-made wool, and locally produced alpaca, allowing her to know exactly where the materials are made and how.
Just as Dean celebrates being a small, independent business, she actively supports small companies and retailers like herself (and Design Milk!) who believe in slow design and working in small batches. To mark the launch of Design Milk’s new e-commerce site, Design Milk Everyday, happy habitat has designed a series of exclusive throws – some are brand new designs, while others feature new colorways – just for us! Take a look!
