Of all of the announcements made at Google’s eagerly anticipated hardware event today – the most notable being the newest Google Pixel models – one distinguished itself as categorically of a more fashionable nature rather than purely functional note. As a follow-up to the collaboration between Google and Opening Ceremony earlier this year, the tech giant announced the vibrant artwork of both LA-based artist Petra Cortright and NYC-based graphic artist Baron Von Fancy are available to print onto Google Artworks Live Cases as limited edition digital accoutrements to the purest of Android-powered devices.
Los Angeles artist Petra Cortright’s impressionistic landscapes of captivating colors and form are renowned for capturing the tactile texture of impasto paintings traditionally associated with Baroque painters transported and updated for the digital age – a body of work that has earned Cortright the title of, “The Monet of the 21st Century“.
Composed of computer-rendered marks and strokes layered over “a mother file,” the compositions are the sum of hundreds of source files manipulated and reconfigured into wholly new visual presence with motifs steeped in symbolism. Each of the nine limited edition digital canvas designs are available to embellish Google Artworks Live Cases with an accompanying wallpaper to complete the aesthetic effect.
New York-based graphic artist Baron Von Fancy takes on a direct and bold approach, with a series splashing commentary about our social media-obsessed culture with colorful slogans of both graphical and thematic nature. Ironically, according to the artist, the series of designs were all created with the intention to “get people to go do things, not just use phones as a way to look at Instagram”, something increasingly difficult to do when our phones have become the doorway into self-absorption.
Both Google Artworks Live Cases series are available beginning today (1pm EST) online at the Google Store for $40 each.
