The city that never sleeps goes into absolute overdrive during the holiday season. The streets turn into a winter wonderland, complete with over-the-top window displays, illuminating Christmas lights and of course the world-famous Rockefeller Christmas Tree. A visit during December must absolutely include a trip to Bryant Park Winter Village for a skate and a hot chocolate.
2. Nuremburg, Germany
This historic city nestled along the Rhine River in the northern part of Bavaria also happens to be home to the ultimate Christmas market, and according to locals the world’s best gingerbread. With a 12th century castle looming in the background, make like locals and feast on and endless array of shortbread cookies and of course a traditional goose roast with all the trimmings.
3. London, United Kingdom
We hear those sleigh bells jingling! No-one does a traditional Christmas like the British, and London is the hub. Bundle up and head down to Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland for some mulled wine, ice skating and a visit to Santa. The gorgeous light displays, enchanting caroling and mulled wine will have you almost forgetting its -20 degrees.
5. Strasbourg, France
Heading south over the Franco-German border, rounding up our list is the French town of Strasbourg. Every year the centre of town is illuminated by a Christmas Market, dating back to 1570. With all the traditional trimming, think a Living Nativity, it’s almost like stepping through time. Add some Duck à l’orange and a yule log and you have yourself an unforgettable French ‘Noël’.
