If you’re looking to do some traveling in March, by far the best direction to go is east. From March 14-17, 2018, Design Shanghai, Asia’s leading international design event, will be celebrating its 5th and biggest show yet, with over 400 international and local design brands and galleries from over 30 countries in attendance. We’re excited to see what new and interesting art, architecture and design will be unveiled at the show and if this sneak preview tells us anything, it’s that there is a lot of good design waiting to be seen.
This year’s theme is “The New Social Era on Boundary” to explore how different fields – art, design, science, technology, and other industries – are gradually changing, innovating and converging to change our lifestyles today. What a great topic to explore and create dialogue, don’t you think? On the show floor, there will be five design halls to peruse: Workplace Design, Kitchen & Bathroom Design, Collectible Design, Classic & Luxury Design, and Contemporary Design. We’re very curious to see how design is changing the office (have you followed us on @designmilkattheoffice yet?), as well as the limited-edition art-meets-design collectibles.
Leading Chinese brands including YANG HOUSE, Domus Tiandi, Maxmarko, W+S, X+Q, Frank Chou and ziinlife will be exhibiting and supporting local designers. Kelly Hoppen MBE, Qeeboo, Pininfarina Extra and Zaozuo will be debuting at the show for the first time, while an A-list of world-renowned names like Zaha Hadid Design, Carl Hansen & Son, Swarovski, and Ligne Roset will be returning to show their latest collections.
Bespoke installations are always attract a crowd so we can’t wait to see Preciosa’s Crystal Automata and Crystal Forest installations and the spatial sculptures by Seckin Pirim.
If all that wasn’t enough, 40 of the world’s brightest minds will take to the stage to discuss the seminar program’s theme, “Design Visionaries, Design Visions, Design Futures.” The seminar will focus on the China’s position in the global marketplace to create and innovate in order to tend to the world’s most urgent issues, such as sustainability, urbanization, pollution and more. Past speakers have included design pioneers like Marcel Wonders, Jaime Hayon and Particia Urquiola.
For those who just can’t get enough of design, the city of Shanghai will also be hosting a variety of offsite events, design tours and networking parties so you can get your design fix. More details can be found here.
So what are you waiting for? Book your flights, get your tickets here, and be ready to explore the best of East meets West design.
