As we’ve seen on our Design Store(y) series, the retail experience has changed a lot in the past few years. Brick and mortar stores are going beyond the dictionary definition of a store to cultivate unique experiences for their shoppers. Pop-up shops have also gained traction as brands experiment with different cities, locations and demographics. Swiss backpack brand QWSTION, whom we’ve featured before for their urban bags, is one of the latest to open a temporary store for four months, joining their permanent flagship stores in Zurich, Vienna and Copenhagen.
Housed in a former arthouse cinema, the QWSTION pop-up is a testament to the brand’s ethos, which strives to think outside the box and improvise. The original space was completely blackened out and so the brand had to come up with a way to bring lightness and warmth into the space.
A white perforated wall holds QWSTION’s bags while brightening up the shop and photographs of stone architecture are projected onto the walls, adding a sense of warmth to an otherwise cold space. The displays and decor are also straight-forward and minimalistic, much like the brand’s own aesthetic, with only the essentials needed like display blocks and simple seating.
In addition to the QWSTION’s coveted bags, the store also carries a selection of local and international brands, including modern footwear by Velt, watches from Glasgow’s Instrmnt, wallets from Amsterdam based L.W.A. Studios, independent special interest magazines from Print Matters, join woven carpets from Schoenstaub, espresso machines from Zuriga, ceramics by Raawii from Copenhagen and furniture by Artek of Helsinki.
The QWSTION temporary store will remain until the end of March 2018. To visit, stop by Limmatquai 16, 8001 Zürich.
