Swatch’s Bold Move Toward a Post-Plastic Future With BIOCERAMIC

Swatch’s Bold Move Toward a Post-Plastic Future With BIOCERAMIC

When we think of Swatch, we remember accessorizing our arm with two or three of the brand’s colorfully graphic timepieces, obviously more for their fashion swag rather than any genuine intent of keeping abreast of the day’s passing hours. The Swiss watchmaker is still around and continues to innovate, most recently on the material front with the announcement of BIOCERAMIC, a new ceramic material formulation composed of two-thirds ceramic and one-third bio-sourced plastic.

About that one-third bioplastic: Swatch’s BIOCERAMIC “mixes conventional ceramic with a bioplastic derived from castor oil,” a sequel to last year’s retro-styled “1983 Collection” using the same biosourced formulation.

Material made from castor oil isn’t new, but still rare enough to be novel, and used to great success in the design of other objects like the w182 Pastille lamp a few years back. But that’s a stationary furnishing, while the Swatch BIG BOLD in BIOCERAMIC is a 47mm diameter case timepiece (water-resistant to 30 meters) requiring a higher degree of durability for daily wear. Noting other formulations of bioceramics are already used for endodontic and orthopedic applications, it bodes as a durable watch material.

Bioplastics derived from castor oil have been used to manufacture other objects like the w182 Pastille lamp to great success.

Swatch has also given their new watch the signature “see-through” treatment, pairing it with a strap, glass and loops also made from biosourced plastic to keep on theme. And since launch last month, the Swiss watchmaker released four additional designs featuring transparent dials and a Swatch Glow that gives the timepieces an even BOLDER [emphasis us] and easier to read face.

With five colors to choose from – the classic design statements black and white, the “color of the year” grey, optimistic sky-blue
and new power-pink – only time will tell whether we see the youth of today sporting one or more BIOCERAMIC derived BIG BOLD Swatches across a single arm like we fondly remember.

Swatch BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC watches retail for $194, available at Swatch stores and online at swatch.com.

The Nuez Lounge BIO Exudes Warmth + Character

The Nuez Lounge BIO Exudes Warmth + Character

Designer Patricia Urquiola has designed the finishing touch for Andreu World’s Nuez furniture collection: the Nuez Lounge BIO. Along with the family’s chair, table and stool, the lounge chair shares a warmth full of character. The Nuez Lounge BIO’s high back shows off the shell’s texture, a characteristic that’s been a highlight of the Nuez collection. The structural shell, which folds almost like a sheet of paper, is manufactured using 100% natural origin thermopolymer that’s generated by living microorganisms, and is biodegradable and compostable. What’s more, the lounge is 100% recyclable and designed so that its materials can be easily separated: shell, foam, fabric, wood and aluminum base. Choose from four colors of thermopolymer: sand, basalt gray, terracotta brown and black.

For the Nuez Lounge BIO, a new collection of textiles made from recycled polyester (PET) was developed. Using water bottles and plastic packaging, the new CIRCULAR ONE PURE ECO® fabric collection is sustainable, planet-friendly and 100% recyclable. What’s not to love?

How Squarespace Can Help Solopreneurs Build Connections

Remember the office? Rewind 14 months and few of us could have envisioned a near-term present when the office for many people would feel like a thing of the past — a thing we used to do, like watch TV with antennas or use phones with cords. At their best, offices could function as valuable hubs of collaboration and creation. And even if most of our days were spent writing rote emails or sitting through meetings, they still provided an easy way to do a hard thing: meet other inspiring people and create work together that far outpaced anything you could do by yourself.

The problem, of course, isn’t unique to office dwellers: Anyone building an empire from the corner of a coffee shop, or from a hot desk at a coworking space, or from behind a canvas in a shared studio space has likely contended with diminished access to other people over the past year.

You might be surprised to learn that Squarespace can help.

Other people mean new ideas, especially crucial for launching a new business online. If you’ve missed asking your desk-neighbor for feedback on your work, Squarespace Forums offer endless opportunities for feedback — not just from your neighbor, but from fellow Squarespace users and digital entrepreneurs around the world. Looking for a fresh perspective on a new website advertising your professional services? Do like Shanhou did when he launched a site sharing his work as a psychologist, and gather detailed advice for improved branding, design and user experience. Video and music producer Brandon received in-depth suggestions for color palette selection and even coding additions when he shared his creative portfolio. (Suggested subject line: “Please grill my site.”) Other forums run the gamut of the site creation process, with topics ranging from Coding and Customization to handling images and videos to SEO and Marketing.

Squarespace offers extensive opportunities for learning and skill-building — a virtual IT department providing training at no additional cost. You don’t even need a Squarespace account to participate in one of their weekly webinar trainings, focused on topics like Getting Started With Squarespace and Launching Your Online Store. The Growing Your Audience webinar covers advanced topics like building your inventory, processing payments, handling orders and understanding your analytics — something that furniture designer Lulu LaFortune says is one of her favorite parts of bringing her business to Squarespace. “I’m obsessed with analytics,” Lulu says. “It’s amazing to be able to see where in the world traction is coming from, and also what products are getting the most attention. I get notifications if a certain product is getting above-average traction, and that just makes my day better.” During these live, 60-minute sessions conducted via Zoom, Squarespace staff will be on hand to address any questions you have.

Between webinars, you have all the resources of the Help Center available as you build your site — it’s frequently mentioned as one of our community’s favorite features. You’ll find a learning style that fits your preferences, whether that’s learning from in-depth written instructions or by video, like jewelry designer Hannah Jewett. “I love the tutorial videos! Most of my jewelry and 3D modeling skillset is self-taught through YouTube, so I’m a big fan of Squarespace’s knowledge library.” And if you’re still stuck, help is just a call or click away, with 24-7 customer service teams available for one-on-one advice. “I’ve used their customer service more than a few times via chat and email, and they’ve been so responsive and clear in walking me through how to resolve my question,” says product designer Leah Ring. “I find it really comforting to know that if I get stuck trying to edit or design something on my website, I can get it resolved quickly so that I’m able to showcase the work the way I want to.”

Emotion Collector by CODE STUDIO Turns Your Feelings Into Colorful Lighting

Emotion Collector by CODE STUDIO Turns Your Feelings Into Colorful Lighting

Merge a mood light, mirror and some Internet of Things connectivity and you’ve got the gist of the concept behind the mood prognosticating, “Emotion Collector“, a laser cut and 3D printed prototype that purports to reflect the mood of its users right back in the colorful feedback form of colored lighting.

All photos: Ratchanok Srichan

Designed by Thai designers Lalita Kitcha and Wongsathon Choonhavan in collaboration with design team 3minutes under the moniker CODE Studio, the tabletop device imagines collecting the emotional data of its users and compiling an emotional average in the form of light colors displayed across a spherical mood light evocative of a crystal ball.

CODE Studio describes the premise and features of their emotional lighting functions as:

• The mirror gives us to reflect ourselves by seeing from outside in.
• Interactive devices to give users answers such as sensor, emoticon display, maybe connect with a webapp in the future.
• Color Lighting represents variety emotion such as white(normal) yellow(happy) red(angry) blue(sad) green(bore) purple(anxious).
• IOT calculate average result of data and visualizes it in the gradient lighting color form to represent mixing of emotions.
• The cover we use freeform profiles inspired by movement of emotion.

As noted above, the concept imagines connecting with a mobile app to work in conjunction with smartphones and/or smartwatches, which likely already actively and passively collects a wealth of data about user emotions through their facial expressions, heart rate and even the emoji and emoticons used while texting.

The Emotion Collector is one of the participating designs showcased as part of the Design Plant 2021 exhibition at ATT19 in June during Bangkok Design Week 2021.

Chrissa Amuah Designs Textiles for Bernhardt Designs Inspired by Ghanaian Symbology

Chrissa Amuah Designs Textiles for Bernhardt Designs Inspired by Ghanaian Symbology

Designer Chrissa Amuah has always lived with “a sense of duality.” The daughter of Ghanaian parents, she was born in London but considers herself “a daughter of Ghana.” Her trips back to her parent’s motherland have inspired her latest collection of textiles, which she has fittingly named the Duality Collection, for Bernhardt Design.

Ghanaian culture is rich with layers, colors, meanings, textures and symbolism. Amuah’s roots are what informed the patterns and colors in the Duality Collection.

On trips to Ghana, I would see these symbols etched in the surfaces of everyday life, from jewelry to architecture. Therefore, my design vision developed naturally. I saw that Ghanaian symbology offered the chance to establish a design blueprint that is contemporary and beautiful, but also has an underlying meaning – a meaning that consciously or subconsciously sends empowering messages.

Although Amuah’s collection is highly personal, she is able to transform Adrinka symbolism into something that’s abstract, sophisticated and more accessible for modern interiors. The Duality Collection comprises six patterns in 56 colorways: Aya, inspired by an Adrinka symbol for fern; Still, a finely woven solid that pairs with Aya; Ink, named for Amuah’s experimentations of drizzling ink on walnut veneer; Snug, a matte bouclé that conveys peace and tranquility; Sella, inspired by a traditional Ghanaian stool called an Assesgua; and finally Touch, a finely textured solid that’s more interesting than typical fabrics.
