If you enjoy tricks of the eye illusions, you’re going to absolutely love these rugs. Designed by Alain Gilles for YO² Rugs, the Hole, Mosaique and Stacked-Up collections are based on geometry, perspective and false impressions that will leave you questioning your own vision.
A gateway to another world? The Hole collection gives the visual impression of an opening, a modern trompe l’oeil. The design works thanks to a hand drawn grid that represents the floor and a circle. Sketched in an almost cartoonish style, certain visual angles provide a the trick of the eye. The round version of the rug allows you to place your “porthole” anywhere in a space.
You’ll have to do a double take when you first lay eyes on the Mosaique collection. Inspired by small details found within a photo, Mosaique is all about playing with the perception of materials (example: faux marble). In this case, the rug’s design mimics tiles and leaves us questioning reality. By overlapping patterns, Gilles creates a sense of movement.
I have to admit, the Stacked-Up collection is the one that fooled me most. The illusion of cheap, stacked, corrugated metal sheets looks as though it has real three dimensional depth to it. The “shadows” that lie between stacked-up sheets are an important graphic element, especially in the version that features an off center composition.
