DMTV Milkshake: Channeling the Energy of New York With Reinaldo Sanguino

DMTV Milkshake: Channeling the Energy of New York With Reinaldo Sanguino

This week’s DMTV Milkshake guest is artist Reinaldo Sanguino. Reinaldo makes massively expressive, exuberantly colorful objects and furniture, mostly in ceramics – like his highly-in-demand stools, vases and other work. For this week’s Milkshake, he joins us from his studio in Long Island City, where he pulled our questions for him out of a custom-made, super-glossy tray in gold, russet brown and deep blue.

Biography Face Oils Create an Experience for Your Senses

Biography Face Oils Create an Experience for Your Senses

The mindset that the Earth is the ultimate source of beauty is behind clean skincare brand Biography and their face oils. That knowledge was only reiterated once they began sourcing ingredients and discovered the multitude of ways the words ‘natural’ and ‘sustainable’ can be taken advantage of. Mainly through overstripping, over-planting or overtaxing a piece of land, or not caring enough about the human beings doing the harvesting.

We realize that the only products you love (or need) are the ones that make for a real change, a meaningful difference, a new chapter in your biography. Thus the name was born.

Biography individually selects the ingredients for their face oils with purity, potency and integrity in mind. Hand-picked fresh ingredients from small fair trade suppliers and their own proprietary formulas make their products like no other. What you won’t find: cruelty, parabens, fillers, mineral oil, preservatives, alcohol or water. All oils are vegan, naturally scented and not tested on animals.

While what’s inside each bottle is incredible, what’s outside is good, too. Most of the materials have already been recycled – and can be reused or recycled again – or come harmlessly from nature, right down to FSC-certified paper and vegan soy-based ink. A special coating protects the actives in each formula from UV-ray degradation. And a protective cotton pouch is lined for leak-resistance and can be further put to work as a travel bag or jewelry pouch.

Our products not only treat you well, they’re also designed to be a treat to see, have and hold. Making them lovely is our way of honoring the contents within.

Beyond Biography’s formulas and interior packaging lies their exceptional exterior packaging. Art Deco-inspired fonts, modern graphics and vibrant colors share the brand’s power, intrigue and whimsy. The identity was created by New York-based artist Adrianne De Loia, who reinterpreted how natural products can be seen as intelligent and desirable.

Petty Grudges Face Oil uses restorative rose actives to rejuvenate dry and damaged skin, improve elasticity, soften fine lines and wrinkles, diminish dark under eye circles and repair sun damage. This formula is best for normal to very dry skin. Rosehip seed oil, evening primrose oil and rose geranium leaf oil work their magic and leave a green, citrus, earthy scent behind.

Soothing and nourishing actives moisturize itchy, tight skin and prevent ingrown hairs and nicks. This oil even promotes beard growth, if you’re growing one. Nendo’s Take on the Farm Stand Promotes Direct Sales From Farmer to Consumer

Nendo’s Take on the Farm Stand Promotes Direct Sales From Farmer to Consumer

Summer beckons road trips, and road trips uncover farm stands… Where you can satisfy your fresh food cravings with a just-picked bounty. Typically located at or near the farm, a farm stand can be a permanent (or semi-permanent) set-up, or something as small as a few roadside tables with crates and baskets filled with whatever was harvested that day. And then there is nendo’s most recent take on the farm stand called Petit Market. Promoting the spread of cheap and fresh agricultural products by supporting direct sales from farmer to consumer, these stands prevent food loss and strengthen local economies with style.

As expected from nendo, the Petit Market stands are wonderfully minimalist in form and function. The simple triangular structures come in four color variations for the exterior, while each user can customize it to their liking with paint and other accessories. The stand kit comes flat packed and can be assembled by one person without any special tools in about 10 minutes. Equipped with adaptable feet for installation on uneven surfaces in different environments, the design also comes with modular shelving capabilities to accommodate various items like flowers or long vegetables. Furthermore, the sloped roof protects them from snow during winter, while it functions as a chimney throughout the summer, releasing the heat from the inside.

Farm stands and farmers markets are the grocery stores of summer, when the produce is so ripe and flavorful you don’t need to do much to take it from your canvas tote to the plate. And it’s not just your tummy or the local economy that benefit. Buying from local farms means avoiding industrial farming and the environmental impact that follows from large-scale agriculture. So, by helping farm stands become as popular as farmers markets by designers such as nendo, we are funding the future of sustainable agriculture so that organic + responsibly-sourced produce don’t have to be a luxury.

Fellow Designs a Modern French Press + Jeong Coffee Teaches Us How to Use It

Fellow Designs a Modern French Press + Jeong Coffee Teaches Us How to Use It

When it comes to making coffee, the French press is an easy, efficient and intuitive method, which is why many coffee lovers start their foray into coffee gear with this accessible product. Just pour in grinds and hot water, set a timer, plunge and pour. Is it possible to improve a process that’s already simple enough though? As it turns out, specialty coffee brand Fellow (whom we’ve shared about time and time again) proves that it can indeed perfect the humble design with the latest edition to its product line, the Clara French Press. Available in Matte Black or Matte Black with premium walnut accents, the Clara separates itself from other French presses with its luxurious build and thoughtful details that will impress even the most passionate coffee aficionados.

Unlike most French presses which tend to have a glass carafe that houses the brew, the Clara features a Heat Lock Double Wall Vacuum that uses insulated stainless steel to maintain a consistently hot temperature for longer periods of time. In terms of ease, the Clara has an All-Directional Pour Lid, which means you don’t have to worry about aligning the spout in order to pour, and two Ratio Aid Lines (one for water and one for coffee grinds) help you make the perfect cup each time without needing a scale. The accompanying wooden Agitation Stick also ensures all the grinds are fully saturated with water with no dry clumps hidden below the water line.

A small though subjective pain point of French presses is that they leave behind a small amount of coffee sludge, made from the extra-fine, micro-particles that get past the filtration. Some don’t mind it, others would prefer a cleaner extraction. The Clara uses an Enhanced Filtration Mesh to ensure very minimal particles make it into your cup for a complex, full-bodied brew. Once you’ve made your brew, the non-stick interior coating makes cleaning, also another pain point of French presses, quick and easy so you can get back to your cup.

With Clara, Fellow elevates the experience of the French press and makes it easier than it already is, but we wondered, how else can we fine-tune this method? Because we’re not baristas, we tapped on Samuel Han, who runs Jeong Coffee with partners Nicholas Cho and Ashley Min, for some expert tips on brewing a good-tasting cup every time.

Firstly, what’s the meaning behind the name Jeong Coffee?

Jeong was inspired by my experiences working as a barista, where having pleasant conversations, enjoying the atmosphere, and observing heartwarming moments unfold in the cafe reminded me of something deeply rooted in Korean culture. The concept of jeong 정 (pronounced “jung”) refers to enduring feelings of warmth, affection, or attachment that people experience in their everyday lives. Although hard to define with no direct English translation, jeong is central to Korean society where it is common to treat even strangers like family. We started this project because we observed how jeong permeated many of the communal aspects of coffee and wanted to create a brand that highlights an important part of Korean culture that we find profound and universal.

We love that this is akin to the popular Danish concept of hygge! You launched this creative coffee project in the midst of the pandemic, which must have been no easy feat. Were there any set backs or key takeaways you’ve learned during this time?

Having launched during the pandemic as an online-only business, we’ve found that our biggest challenge has been conveying the intimate aspects of jeong through meaningful interactions. Since jeong is deeply tied to connections and familial love, we took time to think about how we could reflect thoughtfulness and extra care through our touch-points and unboxing experience. We’ve learned that small gestures and attention to detail go a long way, and we’re excited to continue finding new ways to connect with people especially as the world begins to reopen.

What’s your favorite part about running a coffee business?

Our favorite part about working on Jeong has been the people we’ve gotten to meet along the way. Roasting out of a collective roastery in Brooklyn has allowed us to be a part of a larger community of coffee professionals. We’ve also gotten to know other small business owners and creatives that have encouraged and inspired us throughout the process. It really means a lot to us when people reach out and send us supportive messages!

Now, let’s talk about French presses. What are some key tips to perfecting this already simple process to ensure a good tasting cup?

In terms of French press, we like to start with a bloom pour to saturate the grounds and give them time to degas. In the middle of the brew, we also suggest gently agitating the film that accumulates on top to sink floating grounds back underneath the surface and ensure all the coffee is being extracted. Once the brew is finished, we recommend pressing the grounds with the plunger slowly and pouring the coffee carefully so that you don’t disrupt the grounds at the bottom of the French Press. We find this method keeps coffee particles from rising back to the surface and results in a cleaner cup.

Editor’s note: A gooseneck kettle is nice to have for a precise bloom pour with little effort, but you can get by if you have steady hands. However, an at-home grinder is arguably your most important coffee gear because freshly ground coffee will always taste better, and being able to dial in the right grind settings is what will take your next cup of coffee to the next level.

I noticed you also already use other Fellow products! What made you choose Fellow over other options?

Yes! We love Fellow products because of their beautiful design as well as their intentional details that make home brewing easier and more enjoyable. We view Fellow as a trusted brand in the specialty coffee space because their elegant yet functional tools ultimately enhance the process of brewing a good cup of coffee for beginners and experts alike.

D Studio: A New Modern Design Destination Opens in Copenhagen

D Studio: A New Modern Design Destination Opens in Copenhagen

Design Holding, the global high-end design group with a roster of notable European brands, including B&B Italia, Flos, Louis Poulsen, Arclinea and Maxalto, unveiled their first retail location in Copenhagen, called D Studio. Design Holding envisions a unique design destination where their brands will live under one roof offering a multi-brand experience. D Studio is designed as a hub for modern furniture and lighting where visitors can meet up and connect on various interiors projects and experience the collections in person. To achieve the new design destination, Design Holding enlisted Milan-based studio Design Group Italia to bring their vision to life, from strategy and identity, to each brand’s space.

B&B Italia

Copenhagen is the first location of D Studio, an obvious choice with its design roots, taking over a beautiful historic building in Holmen with 1760 square meters to work with. The Italian brands – B&B Italia, Maxalta and Arclinea – are shown in a different perspective, a Scandinavian one, where their most iconic pieces display a slice of timeless Italian design.

In addition to their immersive Light Lab where experts share all the nuts and bolts of the brand, as well as good lighting and how it can change a space. They also included an informal lounge area allowing designers and visitors a place to meet and get inspired.
