Canyon Homes: 5 Los Angeles Houses Built Without 90-Degree Angles

Canyon Homes: 5 Los Angeles Houses Built Without 90-Degree Angles

Los Angeles’ rampant housing crisis is complicated but some of the biggest issues are sky high rent and real estate prices on top of low inventory available. Thanks to the city’s Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance, single-family homes can be replaced with smaller, more affordable multi-family residences that help increase neighborhood density while keeping in line with the scale and character of the surrounding homes. One such project is Canyon Homes, a boutique communion of five residences located just west of Los Feliz at the base of the Hollywood Hills. The mini neighborhood was designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) with stunning interiors by DISC Interiors, in collaboration with Platform Home and Lawson-Fenning.

Each of the five, two-bedroom homes feature curving metal exteriors, two-story walls of glass on the front, private roof decks, and attached garages.

In addition to the glass fronts, another unique feature for each home: curving walls that result in no 90-degree angles.

White wooden beams cover the perimeter walls as well as the ceilings which makes the curved walls that much more prominent in the design.

The windows and white surfaces keep the spaces clean and bright, while the sustainable white oak hardwood flooring adds texture and warmth.

There are two floor plans available with the garage and utilities on the ground floor, the two bedrooms on the first floor, the open living space on the 2nd floor, and then the rooftop deck.

DISC Interiors came in with their striking aesthetic that effortlessly merges California vibes with a refined modern style. Natural materials, warm textures and rich color palettes round out the spaces without taking away from the visual impact of the unusual architecture, instead enhancing it.

The Thankspressure Rug Combines Acupressure With Dance to Treat Common Ailments

The Thankspressure Rug Combines Acupressure With Dance to Treat Common Ailments

Designed by Sangmin Oh, a graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven and founder of Osangmin Studio, Thankspressure is a tapestry project that prompts the user to engage in acupressure through dance in order to treat six common ailments. What looks like raised pebbles throughout the rug are actually various dance steps that Oh believes will help relieve headaches, eye strain, stiffness, stomachaches, constipation and period pains. The rug, produced in collaboration with TextielLab, is accompanied by a book that shows how it should be technically used. Through textile and innovative technologies, Oh combines eastern acupressure with western sports dances on a colorful stage.

How the Shapes From Home Furniture Collection Went From Dream to Reality

How the Shapes From Home Furniture Collection Went From Dream to Reality

Levi Christiansen’s Shapes From Home furniture collection is quite literally the stuff of dreams – the five pieces were inspired by lucid dreams of a world of objects buried within his subconscious mind. The dreams first showed up when Christiansen was a child, only coming to fruition after his mother met an oracle who told her that his work is reminiscent of another life. Inspired, he dove into a place he’s never seen in waking life to make his visions real.

The Arizona-based self-taught furniture designer began the process with a family of shapes he hoped to use as a map. This study led to refined, distilled forms that grew to feel familiar and comfortable. And through detailed handcrafting and heirloom materials, Christiansen made what once lived only in his mind tactile. The Straddle Side Table, Plural Table, Juntos Shelf, Rhoco Chair, and There, There Sofa follow Christiansen’s organic approach to design, blending style and functionality.
