A Modern House in Taichung That Combines Work and Home Life

A Modern House in Taichung That Combines Work and Home Life

T.M Design Studio was in charge of renovating this house in Taichung, Taiwan, to meet the needs of the owner by designing the space to work as his office and home. Named Dual Concepts, the house seamlessly blends both requirements and allows the designer owner to spend more time with his family. The home was built over 60 years ago, and while they wanted to create a modern interior for the family, they also wanted to respect the history of the building.

The building was found in poor condition, having been neglected over time, but the corner location was ideal as it would increase the natural light needed for a studio.

The window frames shelving made from powder coated metal.

The concrete staircase is a major focal point and it leads to polished concrete floors. Simple, pine plywood is used to create large, inexpensive work surfaces

The concrete stairs directly lead to the bedroom and are surrounded by large panes of glass, which allows light to flow through the space. Wood herringbone parquet floors were installed to warm up the industrial space.

Desktop Wallpaper: August 2017

Desktop Wallpaper: August 2017

This month’s wallpaper was designed by one of our favorite brands, Hygge & West. This dreamy, celestial pattern was created in collaboration with Katie Rodgers who combines her love of watercolors and fashion for her site, Paper Fashion (side note: I’ve also been a long-time fan of Katie and have taken her Skillshare class before, which I highly recommend!).

A little bit about Hygge & West: their wallpapers are all screen printed by hand and are Class A fire-rated, fade resistant, extremely durable and washable. Besides those facts though, I love Hygge & West for their modern wallpaper patterns and their eye for collaborating with talented designers and creatives (past collaborations include Rifle Paper Co., Oh Joy!, and Heath Ceramics). I can’t wait to install one of their prints in my future home but until then, I’ll just install this one on all my devices.

Exclusive: Connection Ashtray by Philippe Malouin for OTHR

Exclusive: Connection Ashtray by Philippe Malouin for OTHR

Introducing our latest OTHR exclusive preview: the sophisticated Connection Ashtray by returning designer Philippe Malouin, crafted in 3D printed steel.

This object has the look and feel of old cast iron, but with the exact precision and features that can only be achieved with modern technology.

An object that belongs as much in a museum as it does your living room table, the Connection Ashtray is an elemental expression of sophistication. This numbered edition is a part of the Connection Series, which includes the Connection Bowl and Connection Vessel, as well as a limited-edition version of the Connection Bowl in 3D printed copper.

The series was initially conceived by London-based designer Philippe Malouin as a series of simple, thin, everyday objects focusing on the 3D printed technique as shape creation.

Malouin, a Canada native, has developed a diverse portfolio that ranges from tables to chairs to art objects to installations. He has studied at ENSCI and University of Montreal in addition to his alma mater, Design Academy Eindhoven. With clients including Hem, Ace Hotel, and Established & Sons, Malouin creates conceptual designs that balance finesse, functionality and a fondness for risk.

Get your early edition of the Connection Ashtray in matte black 3D printed steel here before it goes on sale to everyone else on Thursday.

OTHR is an on-demand 3D printed design brand producing objects by today’s most talented designers— and each week, we bring you exclusive, pre-launch access to their latest designs.

Sean Woolsey Launches the Woolsey Shuffleboard Table

Sean Woolsey Launches the Woolsey Shuffleboard Table

The mere mention of shuffleboard always conjures up images of elderly people playing on a cruise ship for me, but the game expands far past that limited view. California craftsman Sean Woolsey is no stranger to game design, as you may remember his ping pong table we featured last year, so it’s no surprise he’s back at it with the Woolsey Shuffleboard Table.

While your table won’t come with ponies, you’ll have just as much fun playing the puck sliding game without them. The steel-framed table has a rift sawn white oak top finished with two coats of UV resistant epoxy resin for added durability. The playing lines and numbers are inlaid black walnut, which is the same material the legs are made of. The gutters feature an industrial charcoal grey felt and there are levelers hidden under the top and in the legs to adjust, align, and level out the table.

The 168″ x 31″ x 31″ tall table comes with four white and four black pucks, shuffleboard salt (aka wax, powder, and sand), and a magnetic wall mount to store the pucks when done.

Each table is built-to-order over approximately six to nine weeks and it comes in your choice of black or white.
