Wicked Face Painting Ideas For Halloween by BrandsExclusive

Have your little goblins got hocus pocus on the brain? There’s no need to struggle with the sewing machine or battle the crowds to pick up the last Harry Potter costume this Halloween. Kids adore having their faces painted – in fact, it’s one of the rare occasions in which you can get them to sit still, even when they’re hopped up on sugar!

But if you think turning your little monster into a REAL monster isn’t within your skill set, think again! The effects that can be created with quality face paints are deceptively easy (and addictive), especially when teamed with a YouTube tutorial or two.

We recommend visiting your nearest face-painting store and stocking up on the right paints, brushes and sponges to achieve the following face-painting ideas. Professional paints are non-toxic, apply flawlessly, won’t stain clothing and, because no one wants to send their child off to school with a green face, wash off easily with water. You don’t need to use much paint to get good coverage either, so they’ll last you for many Halloweens to come!

Face Painting Ideas

Winged Creatures

Of all the face painting ideas out there, reward-to-effort ratio doesn’t get much better than the butterfly mask, which is always a winner with little girls, and sometimes little boys, too! You can use a rainbow cake or split cake for a really easy multi-colour effect, or simply blend three stripes of colour on the sponge to customise the mask for Halloween. Create a spooktacular winged creature using purple, orange, white and black, or you could use a similar technique to adapt the butterfly into wicked dragons and bats. Click through for a really easy butterfly mask tutorial.

Sugar Skull

Raise the dead with a hauntingly beautiful sugar skull design, inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday. The best thing about this face-painting idea is that it leaves oodles of room to customise it to your child’s liking. Use their favourite colours and add a little black magic with glitter and diamantes. You’ll need a steady hand and a still model to get the shapes just right, but otherwise it’s just a series of circles and lines. Swap teardrops for cobwebs and don’t forget the flower crown! Learn how to paint it here.

Midnight Kitty

The traditional black cat takes on a mysterious glow when you use luminous pearl paints, as seen in this stunning tutorial. A striking option for your own Halloween costume, or you can tone down the eye makeup to make it a little more kid-friendly. Finished with an eerie full moon, vampire bats and stars or cobwebs around the eyes, this design is guaranteed to turn heads.

A Modern, 12-Year-Old House in the Czech Republic Gets a New Interior

A Modern, 12-Year-Old House in the Czech Republic Gets a New Interior

In Humpolec, a small town in the Czech Republic, the Rusty House is a project completed by Luděk Rýzner of OK PLAN ARCHITECTS after the owners decided they wanted to renovate the interior after 12 years of living in it. The house was originally built in 2005 on a small plot of land, which required creative solutions to make it work. The original design called for raw materials, like polished concrete floors, an exposed galvanized steel structure, concrete-covered corrugated sheet metal on the ceiling, smooth concrete walls, and an exterior clad in pre-rusted sheet metal (CorTen), for a modern, industrial look that blended in with the neighborhood thanks to the green landscaping. Over time, the owners decided they wanted to scale back on the raw, industrial look a bit on the main floor, while softening other areas throughout.

Due to so many hard and reflective surfaces, the acoustics became a problem that needed to be solved with oak panels, along with new window coverings. The original sofas stayed but were complemented with a pillow in Alexander Girard fabric, a new rug, and an Artemide floor lamp. Hanging above are two sculptural pendants from FLOS.

The dining table was custom designed by OK PLAN ARCHITECTS and paired with Eames chairs.

The fireplace got a new insert for a more modern look.

The old kitchen cabinets were replaced with ones that offered better functionality.

Geode Generative Jigsaw Puzzles by Nervous System

Geode Generative Jigsaw Puzzles by Nervous System

We’ve long been fans of Nervous System and they’re back with a new series of generative jigsaw puzzles that are inspired by geology. Geode, and their larger sibling Orbicular, look as if they’re sliced sections of colorful banded agate stones instead of puzzles made of a birch plywood.

This new wave of puzzles were created using a new generative system called Maze for making the puzzle cuts in these distorted shapes.

Each puzzle features a computer generated image of an algorithmic geode that’s then cut into a maze-like pattern for you to solve. The pieces feature intertwining arms that make the puzzles more fun and more of a challenge to put together. Geode puzzles include about 180 pieces with four crystal-themed additions, while Orbicular puzzles contain approximately 360 pieces with five crystal-themed ones.

The Secret Lives of Fruits and Vegetables by Maciek Jasik

The Secret Lives of Fruits and Vegetables by Maciek Jasik

With Halloween tomorrow we thought we would share a visual ghost story… Here is a beautiful tribute to the origins, mythology, and symbolism of fruits and vegetables by Polish-born, NYC-based photographer Maciek Jasik.

Until only very recently, each fruit and vegetable held its own connection to culture and afterlife. Somewhere along the way we’ve been separated from these origins, and only know them as the flavors and textures they provide.

Several of the most common vegetables took thousands of years to cultivate, the watermelon was originally known for being bland and buried with pharaohs as a water source in the afterlife and Buddha considered the pomegranate one of the three most blessed fruits.

Jasik’s series aims to revive these mystical, invisible qualities to fruits and vegetables that have been lost amidst the clamor of nutritional statistics. He accomplishes these seductively eerie shots by poking small holes within his subjects to make the colorful and deeply-hued smoke bombs subtly waft or flood from the inside.

So be careful when you start carving that pumpkin… you might get engulfed in a poof from the past.
