Flared pants are just one of many retro looks that are making a comeback this year. It’s been so long since any of us have donned a pair of these 70s babies, and we’ll forgive you if – like us – you’ve also forgotten how to wear them. Here’s how to do it.
1. Consider width and Flow
A well balanced outfit will contain different elements, some wide and some narrow, some flowing and some fitted. Flare pants are, quite obviously, an extremely flowy and wide piece of clothing, and so it’s a must that you pair them with something more fitted. Forget the loose, baggy shirts you’d normally pair with your skinny pants or you’ll look like you dressed yourself a hundred sizes too big.
2. Don’t Overdo The 70s Look
Flare pants are a nice little flashback from the hippie years, but to pull them off in 2017 you want to look like you’re in the 21st century. Avoid pairing flare pants with any other outwardly 70s styles (tie dye shirts, for example) or you’ll look like you’re heading to a Woodstock themed party.
3. Wear With a Heel & And Keep Your Jeans Hemmed
While you can technically wear flare pants with any shoes you want, today we’re talking about how to pull them off, and the best way to do that is by pairing them with some heels (height is optional). The wide legged, loose shape of flare pants is designed to be displayed in its full length so that they can hang correctly and show off their form.
Make sure to keep the pants hemmed so that they almost – but not quite – skim the floor. You don’t want your pants trailing along the ground or they’ll end up ripped, wet, dirty, and so on, and that’s not a good look! For this reason, if you wear your flare pants with heels then stick to heels – going back to flats will mess with the hemline and get it dirty.
