Being winter and all, it’s highly likely you’ve already decided to flee to some deserted tropical island, but in case you need another reason to make a sea-change, here it is. Coconut oil.
Coconut oil is one of the best sources of healthy fats, which help with digestion, immunity, mental performance, weight loss and hormone support to name but a few. Studies have shown that communities in the South Pacific where coconuts are a dietary staple enjoy excellent health with almost no evidence of heart disease. While we certainly don’t discourage the eating of coconuts, we’re here to talk about the benefits of coconut oil when it’s slathered all over your body.
From natural sunscreen to moisturiser, this multi-purpose miracle worker is more than deserving of all the attention it’s received of late. But truth be told, smelling like a Pina Colada is more than enough payoff for us! Here are a few topical uses that your body (and nostrils) will thank you for.
Makeup Remover: Not only will your skin thank you for actually removing your makeup before you go to bed, it’ll feel much softer and hydrated if you use coconut oil over alcohol-based wipes which can dry out your skin. A few drops will even remove stubborn waterproof makeup.
Cleanser: Coconut oil with a little water will gently remove dirt without stripping your skin of its natural oils, which can seriously dry it out and lead to skin issues.
Moisturiser or Night Cream: Whether you apply it at night to work its magic while you sleep, or as a daily facial moisturiser, dry skin will drink it up! You can rub coconut oil into your cuticles, dry elbows or use it as a whole body lotion. Consider adding a few drops to your regular body lotion.
Hair Oil: Tame your mane by using coconut oil as a frizz fighter! A few drops will nourish dry ends and smooth down fly-aways. It’s also thought to offer low UV protection, and work well as an intensive conditioning mask – just be sure to shampoo well afterwards.
Shaving Cream: Best used for a wet shave, make sure you soften up your follicles with warm water before applying enough coconut oil to coat your skin. Not only will you enjoy a super close shave, coconut oil can help prevent dry skin and irritations thanks to its antimicrobial properties.
