This week we’re celebrating one of our favourite beauty staples – the humble mascara. In our current brow, contour and highlight obsessed beauty scene, let’s not forget this longstanding wonder-worker. Particularly for those of us with lighter features, a quick swipe of the mascara wand can add instant drama and glamour to any look.

So without further ado, here are some of our top tips and tricks for making the most of this hardworking beauty staple!

1. Revive dried, clumpy mascara

There’s nothing more irritating that finding your expensive mascara has dried out (even if maybe you were the one who forgot to screw it closed this morning). The result is clumpy, uneven lashes – simply unacceptable! Luckily, it’s easy to reverse this problem – simply add a drop or two of saline solution, commonly known as eye drops, into the tube, give it a few good pumps and you’re back in action.

2. Remove waterproof mascara naturally

Waterproof formulas hold a range of benefits – they hold curl better and won’t smudge if you sweat, get rained on, or cry profusely through your eighth viewing of Toy Story 3. The downside is that they can be notoriously difficult to take off. You don’t want to be rubbing your eyes with harsh removers everyday, or risk pulling out precious lash hairs and irritating the delicate skin around your lids. We’ve found that natural oils such as coconut and olive oil are a great way to gently remove waterproof mascara. And for those super savvy beauty geeks – layer your waterproof formula over regular mascara so that you get all the benefits with easier removal later on.

3. Pull off coloured mascara like a pro

Electric blue mascara? Purple? Red? It sounds crazy, but bear with us – it’s easier than you think to translate the coloured mascara look from high fashion runways to the street. Try coordinating your coloured mascara with a matching eyeliner, nails or lippie to give your makeup a themed look, or pair bright lashes with minimal makeup on the rest of your face to add statement style without looking “overdone”. Purple works great with green and blue eyes, and electric blue works well with dark eyes – providing the added benefit of making the whites of your eyes look even whiter. Now we can all have lashes as loud as our personality!

4. Take your lash game to the next level fibre mascaras

If you haven’t got a fibre mascara in your makeup kit, yesterday was the time to get one. While traditional cream mascaras are great at thickening and darkening, fibre mascaras contain actual tiny fibres – like silk and rayon – which cling to and lengthen the structure of your natural lash hairs, elongating them like never before. Devotees say that they’re so good they’ve replaced falsies, and at a fraction of the fuss, we don’t blame them.
