After 25+ years of making waves in the design world as a stylist and designer, Nicci Green founded lighting brand Articolo in an effort to engage with her passion for natural variations in mouth-blown glass. Taking the reins in 2012 as creative director, she set out fo focus on and cultivate the art of light through its movement, shadow play, and the individuality of each piece. Now there are over 20 collections in Articolo’s sophisticated portfolio of lighting designs, and today Nicci is taking the time to share a few of her favorite things with us for Friday Five.
1. Rain Room
I’m very excited that the Random International’s Rain Room artwork will be here in Melbourne this August. The Rain Room is a responsive environment, engaging all the senses, allowing you to be fully immersed. This globally significant work seeks to explore how human relationships to each other and nature are increasingly mediated through technology. I’ve been lucky enough to experience this artwork many times across the world – and yes, I do have tickets for Melbourne!
2. Bangarra Dance Theatre Australia, 30 years of 65 thousand
Recently I was fortunate enough to see 30 years of 65 thousand, the Bangarra Dance Theatre’s landmark 30th anniversary showcase. This diverse program of three contemporary works display passionate storytelling, rich artistry, and deep community connections. Australia’s leading indigenous dance company genuinely blew me away, an utter Australian wonder and a must-see performance if you get the chance.
3. Friedemann Buehler
For 20 years Friedemann Buehler has been perfecting his craft, quite literally carving out an artform all on his own. After sourcing his wood from felled trees in Hohenlohe, Germany, he spins and carves with a multitude of different tools and a process entirely unique to him. What I enjoy the most about Friedemann Buehler’s work is that he introduces you to wood in a way you have never seen it before, revealing the beautiful dialogue of nature.
4. Jaimal Odedra, Rupi
For many years I’ve followed Jaimal Odedra’s work, I truly admire his experimental nature. Recently I’ve fallen in love with his latest collection – the Rupi – a set of solid bronze urns in six sizes. Each piece creates the illusion of bottomlessness with a mirror-polished interior. Their cylindrical, textured exteriors, especially when set together, have a remarkable architectural quality. Jaimal uses traditional sand-casting methods from Morocco to form these beautiful organic freeform shapes, creating centerpieces, place settings, and objects for the home.
5. Hogan Sneakers – White leather sneakers
I’m in love with my Hogan Sneakers – they’re perfect for wearing around the studio, but honestly I wear them from day to night. They’re the new high heel, for me anyway.
