Two new brands just launched in the Design Milk Shop, both of which create handmade products from recycled and upcycled materials. Check them out!
Launched in 2013, South African eyewear brand Ballo came out of the gate with a different approach. They wanted to make gender neutral sunglasses by hand out of recycled and upcycled materials. Over the years, the carbon neutral business has evolved to where they use only recycled offcuts and other sustainable materials, like cork, hemp, and wood, and work with local crafts people to make each pair as opposed to automated machinery. The results are design-led frames from a do-good company that creates jobs in a high unemployment area and plants a tree with GreenPop for every pair of sunglasses sold.

Melbourne-based Champ.Co was founded by Lauren Stellar, a trained architect with years of experience working at various architecture firms. Launching the brand gave Stellar the opportunity to explore smaller scale mediums in addition to bespoke architectural projects. What makes this jewelry line different than all the others? The jewelry is made from recycled airplane tires and new rubber. Champ.Co’s commitment to ethical production begins by keeping used airplane tires out of landfills and turning them into a new material to create beautiful geometric pieces. The playful designs in bold colorways feature speckled textures that make each piece that much more intriguing.
