Astro’s Capsule Collection Volume 01 is a limited edition series of three luminaires, all functional and beautiful, precise and restrained. ORB, designed by James Bassant, and Halftone and io Pendant, designed by Riley Sanders, have been created to stand out in a timeless way for years to come.
Sanders’ Halftone wall pendant focuses on a simple shape – the circle – etched with a pattern upon translucent acrylic. The pattern starts at the edge of the disc, and increases to reveal a vivid ring of light as you move your gaze inward. The translucent acrylic allows the wall to be visible when Halftone is lit or unlit. The wall fixture is available in two sizes and depths, and can be layered to produce even more intense illumination.
Sander’s second fixture is the handcrafted io Pendant, its name derived from the Greek term Ionic. The influence of the culture is easy to identify once you see fluted detailing reminiscent of ancient pillars. Using the process of gravity-fed glass extrusion, the fixture takes a circular 2D design and extrudes a ribbed cylinder. Lighting components are kept hidden, giving the fluted glass all the glory, and allowing the light to reflect and refract without interruption.
Bassant’s Orb found its inspiration in an orrery, better known as a mechanical model of the solar system. The illuminated central sphere acts as the sun, while an adjustable mirror ‘orbits’ around it. Designed to work best next to a bathroom mirror, Orb makes for great task lighting. There’s also the Orb Single, that can be partnered with the Orb or displayed alone. In this case as well, you’ll find complex engineering hidden behind a light fixture that feels nothing but light.
