Introducing our New E-Commerce Sites, Design Milk Everyday and Design Milk Travels

Introducing our New E-Commerce Sites, Design Milk Everyday and Design Milk Travels

Holy cow, we’ve been busy!

Today, Design Milk is embarking on a new and exciting journey. While trendspotting and sharing beautiful, functional design products will always be at the core of Design Milk, it has been our dream to expand the Design Milk brand to do something more—to help make great design more accessible. We began this journey by creating our sister Instagram channels @designmilkeveryday and @designmilktravels.

Now, we take the next step on our journey by creating two new online shops so that everyone can access these great designs. Welcome DesignMilkEveryday.com and DesignMilkTravels.com.

Design Milk Everyday is a carefully curated assortment of modern design objects for daily life, featuring brands we love, and we know you will love, too.

Design Milk Travels is a content-focused site that speaks to all aspects of travel and exploration. The Design Milk Travels Journal will showcase travel ideas, destinations, products and more to inspire your next adventure.

These new sites are our first steps into what will be an exciting new adventure for us. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be adding more products and brands we know you’ll love, so stick around and be sure to follow @designmilkeveryday and @designmilktravels and sign up for their newsletters here.

On a personal note, I’ve spent over a decade growing Design Milk and have had the privilege of being part of a community of people who love design as much as I do. Some of you have only recently begun reading, or maybe you’ve been a regular reader for a while now. And, some of you have even been with us since the beginning—that’s just about 13 years! We’re, like, a teenager now… it’s been an incredible adventure and I’m glad to still be on this wild and crazy fun ride with all of you. Thank you for being here.

Hope to see you over there at DesignMilkEveryday.com and DesignMilkTravels.com.

The Theatre Goes from Warehouse to a Modern Home in Barcelona

The Theatre Goes from Warehouse to a Modern Home in Barcelona

Cadaval & Solà-Morales recently converted a late nineteenth century theatre, that first became a barn and then a warehouse for toilet paper, into a modern live/work space in Barcelona. Appropriately named ‘The Theatre,’ the home is located in the vibrant Poblenou neighborhood where it benefits from its original industrial design making use of the expansive height and size.

The architects preserved the warehouse’s structure, only reinforcing it, while restoring the original walls of brick that remain exposed throughout the interior.

The main space is filled with natural light and ventilation thanks to the walls of windows that surround a new patio. The patio naturally expands the interior to the outside where a small pool is located alongside a couple of hammocks.

The central part of the home is where the common spaces are located, including the loft-like kitchen, living room, dining room, and study. While it’s an oversized space, it feels cozy with the help of various objects and textures found in the materials, like wood, brick, metal, and stone.

A classic car resides in a space that doubles as the entryway to the house. The car becomes a sculpture that can be viewed through large wooden doors that open up to the main living space.

On either side of the main space, there’s a studio that features a mezzanine for sleeping and an area for a kitchen and bathroom on the ground level.

George and Willy Release a New Kraft Paper Roll Dispenser

George and Willy Release a New Kraft Paper Roll Dispenser

Back in 2014, we shared a kraft paper roll dispenser from George and Willy that we still get asked about to this day. The New Zealand studio has taken the original design a step further with the release of the Smith Roller. The new version offers the same, easy-to-use messaging system as the first one but with the use of natural materials instead of metal. Using American Ash wood and high-quality Italian leather, the Smith Roller delivers a clean writing surface simply by pulling down on the paper. The paper is kept in place by a flat wooden bar that becomes a straight edge for easy tearing when you’re done.

Two leather loops held in place by brass screws suspend a wooden dowel that holds a roll of kraft paper. Whether you’re a doodler, a designer, or a list-maker, the options are pretty limitless as to what you can use the Smith Roller for – it’s even great for kids who like to writer or draw.

The Smith Roller comes with everything you need to mount and use it, even a roll of brown kraft paper.

The Smith Roller comes out in a few weeks and you can sign up to be notified when it’s on sale here.
