Seoul-based design studios HATTERN and LAB.CRETE teamed up to collaborate, research, and work with two materials that are in contrast to one another – acrylic and concrete.
With an objective of creating a new type of terrazzo, HATTERN focused on transparent materials and color, while LAB.CRETE took on opaque materials and density. The two studios settled on the combination of acrylic and concrete. Acrylic to transmit light and maximize spatiality, and concrete to build up density and opaqueness.
HATTERN and LAB.CRETE added color, pattern, and shape to the concrete that penetrates the acrylic fragments, and acrylic that cut pieces and filled the remaining space with concrete. The two materials become one non-independent material that is completely mixed together. As a result, the furniture series is a graphic body of work that controls color, pattern, and density while satisfying the requirements of both strength and transparency.
