Hej studio, a multidisciplinary food branding and design studio based in Bregenz, Austria and Copenhagen, Denmark challenged themselves to create face masks that are more natural and pleasant than those we associate with hospitals and sterile environments.
“Working with food and design in our daily studio work, we got to think of the many foods that organically wrap around our faces, covering mouth and nose.”
After playing with cabbage, radicchio, and other conforming veggies, they created this striking Corona Food Masks portrait series. Obviously these food masks don’t protect against any virus but they do explore the impact of face masks on our social life from a food designer’s perspective and draw a friendlier image of the pandemic hopefully helping to convert those reluctant to wear face masks at all.

Los Angeles-based Benjamin Luddy and Makoto Mizutani launched Scout Regalia back in 2008 and have since been growing their collection of furniture and product offerings designed for everyday living. Some of their most practical designs are their simple yet durable SR Wall Hooks made from heavy gauge powder coated steel. An extension of that is the SR Wall Rack which turns three wall hooks into a small shelf. Both the wall hooks and the wall racks come with matching screws, drywall anchors and instructions for easy installation.
Each double-pronged hook holds up to 30 lbs when screwed into drywall and double that when anchored in solid blocking. The SR Wall Hooks come in seven powder coated colors, including Navy Grey, Bright Orange, Fern Green, Salmon Pink, Mint Green, Matte Black and Matte White, as well as in Brushed or Polished Brass and Stainless Steel.
The SR Wall Rack brings additional function with an added 17.5″ wide shelf connecting three wall hooks underneath. It’s available in Brushed Brass, Bright Orange, Navy Grey, Matte Black and Matte White.

This week’s DMTV Milkshake guest is Jerry Helling, President and Creative Director of Bernhardt Design. As the Creative Director of Bernhardt Design, Jerry Helling led its evolution from an esteemed furniture company to an agenda-setting brand with a roster of designers that could double as a who’s-who of global talent. While he’s championed work by Jaime Hayon, Yves Béhar, Monica Forster, and many others, Helling has simultaneously sought out emerging talent. As the inaugural President of the Be Original Americas initiative in 2014, he worked to give the industry the tools it needs to protect their ideas and prevent knockoffs; as the Founder of ICFF Studio in 2005, Helling has trained the spotlight on their work.
Here, Helling explains why designers should learn to communicate with words as well as products, making an impact with design in El Salvador, as well as what he’s learned from Bernhardt’s severalcollaborations with furniture designer/visual artist/Brooklyn 99 star/former NFLer Terry Crews: “I knew he was creative in many fields,” Helling says “I didn’t realize just how many — or how he could go from in the morning working on Brooklyn 99 to in the afternoon working on his incredible, interactive children’s book to in the evening working on a screenplay — and still make time for design.” Finally, he names the two best-designed products in his house. “My cliche answer is still my Apple TV remote — I wish all objects were as intuitive and simple and easy to use,” he says. For the other, let’s take a step with Jerry into his kitchen.

A master of chair design, Hans J. Wegner created up to 500 of them during his long career. Carl Hansen & Son has produced Wegner’s furniture for the past 70 years, and now they’re adding the elegant CH78 lounge chair – Mama Bear – to their exclusive collection. First displayed in 1954, the chair is a fine example of Wegner’s talent for creating inviting seats that draw people in through their aesthetics and functionality.
Mama Bear is a light lounge chair with an organic shape and solid upholstered frame. Its angled legs give a relaxed yet stable look, while the upwards-angled armrests add a dynamic and inviting element. The curved backrest, reminiscent of a wingback, and the loosely suspended neck pillow only add to its welcoming design.
“The CH78 lounge chair’s characteristic expression and lightness fits perfectly into a modern context… It’s furthermore a natural next step after having introduced Hans J. Wegner’s CH71 lounge chair and CH72 sofa from 1952 back in 2018. Like both of those pieces, CH78 is the embodiment of comfort in a limited space,” said Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son.
CH78 was created in close collaboration with Hans J. Wegner’s daughters, who manage their father’s legacy through the company Hans J. Wegner’s Design Studio.
Spanish brand Vondom’s sustainable Ibiza outdoor collection was designed by Eugeni Quitllet. Ibiza was actually inspired directly by Quitllet’s childhood spent on the island. The sea breeze, a feeling of freedom, the sun on skin and the Mediterranean Sea were all influences in his chair designs. You’ll notice Ibiza includes plenty of wave-shapes that imitate seashells, too. As we often say, these furniture pieces are made for the outdoors but would look just as good inside your home.
Each chair in Ibiza is manufactured with recycled plastic from the Mediterranean, the first collection to be part of Vondom’s Revolution. This renews their commitment to sustainability, as well as with the eco-smart furniture industry of the future. This ethos is what Vondom hopes to leave behind as their legacy in the world of design.
