Abstract, Leaf Motif Paintings by Artist Corey Mason

Abstract, Leaf Motif Paintings by Artist Corey Mason

Texas-born Corey Mason is an emerging American artist bringing his background in landscape architecture to his canvases. His most recent work revisits childhood memories of gardening, leading him to begin working with a leaf motif in 2018. When the pandemic hit, he reimagined the leaf idea and began painting on an iPad at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina. When the quarantine rules lightened up, Corey was able to turn the digital works into analog silkscreen printing templates. For the backgrounds, he used random images he found online, like that of tennis player Stan Smith at the US Open, a nod to one of the only sports allowed during self-isolation. Other backgrounds spotted are printed images of lips, mouths, bodies and car rims. Utilizing a screen printing technique, the layered paintings combine the backgrounds with abstract leaves in white, black, and blue that make me think of raindrops on windows that are always sharply in focus at first sight, only to reveal a less-defined scene going on behind them.

If you love Corey’s work as much as we do, come back next week as we unveil an exciting new collaboration we’ve been working on behind the scenes! If you want to be the first to know, sign up here!
