3 Ways To Spot a Fake Designer Handbag by BrandsExclusive

We all love a fabulous designer handbag at a bargain price, but how can you ensure you get the real deal?

The general rule is that if it is too good to be true, it normally is. However, there are some clever ways to make sure you’re getting the real deal, whether you’re shopping online or offline. Here, we share our best tips for spotting a fake designer handbag.

1. Take Your Time

If you’re online shopping, take your time if you don’t feel confident the shop you’re browsing is authentic. Go back a week or two later to see if the website is still up – if it was supplying fraudulent goods, it will most likely be tracked down and closed. Also, try contacting customer service and see if you get a response, and research online reviews.

If something still feels fishy, you can call the credit cards the company accepts, and enquire whether there’s been any reports of fraud activity.

2. Look at The Hardware & Lining

Train your eye by looking at the real thing in person – at a boutique or an authorised dealer. That way, if you come across a bag you suspect might be fake, you know where to look.

On a fake designer handbag, there will normally be a slight variation to the look of the logo, so the counterfeiters can claim they haven’t copied the logo but that it is a different logo altogether.

We recommend inspecting the hardware – such as the zip, lining buckle and rivets. If they have already lost their shine, it is probably a fake. Make sure you know what the lining should look like on the real deal, and check.

3. Shop Local & Report

Although you might feel enticed buying a cheap, designer handbag from an overseas site that you’re not familiar with, we recommend buying local. If you do end up purchasing a fraudulent handbag, you can report it to Fair Trading. However, they can’t help you if you haven’t purchased from an Australian website.

Also, make sure to report the retailer – most luxury brands will have a contact for their legal department listed on their website.
