7 Ways You’re Unintentionally Destroying Your Designer Handbag by BrandsExclusive

So you’ve given your credit card a good workout and bought the designer handbag of your dreams, but now what?

Most luxury bags are well equipped to handle every day wear and tear. However, most of us are unaware that some of the things we do in our everyday lives can actually damage our handbag, including how we store them and even how we clean them. However, the good news is you can easily avoid the damage.

A little bit of TLC will go a long way when it comes to your bag. Here, we list how you could be unintentionally destroying your designer handbag!

1. You’re Exposing it to Moisture

Moisture which can lead to mould and mildew is by far the biggest threat to your designer handbag, so make sure to store it in a dry, cool place. Never store them in plastic bags, as that can make the leather sweat and produce moisture.

2. You’re Throwing Away The Silica Gel Packets

Keep the little packets of silica gel that normally come with the bag, and put them in your bag when you’re not using it – the silica gel will help keep the moisture away.

3. You’re Exposing it to Salt

If you live near the beach, it is extra important to make sure to store your bag properly as the salt in the air can tarnish the hardware, such as the zip and buckles. So put your bag in a dustbag when you’re not using it, and store it safely away in a dry cupboard.

4. You’re Putting it on a Dirty Floor

A lot of the damage to a bag will be done when you put it on the floor when out and about. Get a bag hook that you can easily carry in your bag, so next time you’re at a bar or restaurant, you can just hook your handbag to the table.

5. You’re Not Removing Stains Right Away

If you do get a stain, get it removed and cleaned professionally as soon as possible – try a shoe maker or a bag spa (yep, they exist!).

6. You’re Cleaning it With Baby Wipes

Many swear by cleaning their bags with baby wipes, but be careful – especially if the wipes contain alcohol, as they can tarnish the surface and colour of your handbag. To be on the safe side, try on a small area of the bag (perhaps underneath it) to see how it reacts.

7. You’re Not Protecting The Lining

Use a makeup case or a handbag organiser to avoid makeup stains or keys scratching the lining. Although baby wipes can tarnish the outside of your bag, they are great for keeping the inside of your designer handbag clean.
