Highlights From Design Week Mexico

Highlights From Design Week Mexico

This year’s 9th edition of Design Week Mexico (DWM) drew in over 85,000 visitors, conveyed more than 200 design studios and brands, and launched a series of exhibitions and installations that spotlight the country’s affinity and advocacy for design and architecture. Here are a few of our favorite highlights:

The prestigious Design Week Mexico Inédito prize was awarded to Lucila Torres and Max Almeida of Studio äCo in collaboration with Fernando González for their innovative ceramic nest heater prototypes, the ECN02 (fire ceramic nest 02) and ECN03 (electric ceramic nest 03). These heaters use the properties of ceramics to dissipate/conserve heat and, thanks to the Inédito prize, Studio äCo will be able to provide these energy-efficient heaters to vulnerable communities in the Chiapas region.

DWM hosted Switzerland as the guest country and celebrated the country’s design legacy at the Museo de Arte Moderno with the 100 Years of Swiss Design exhibition, on view through February 2018. The exhibition highlights both country’s history of design.

Over on the upscale district of Planco, the Design House was transformed into a site-specific installation to showcase the latest collections of 18 studios, including Ezequiel Farca, Studio Roca, Sofia Aspe, MOB and C Cúbica.

Designed by Mexican studio Materia, the Tamayo Pavilion in the Museo Tamayo gardens will be on view through March 2018. The pavilion’s design features two curved rows of white concrete columns linked together at the top with pine wood beams and was designed as a place for contemplation and reflection.
