How to Wear Makeup at the Beach by BrandsExclusive

Let’s face it, how many of us have that naturally bronzed look at the beach that make it seem like we stepped off the cover of Sports Illustrated? Makeup is a must, however heat, salt and humidity are not a friend to cosmetics. If you’re really not feeling that #nomakeup selfie, here are the best ways to keep your face in place while living it up in the sun.

First, don’t forget to slip, slop, slap!

Sunscreen may leave your skin feeling a bit icky, but this is absolutely vital! As a general rule, try and put it on before applying your makeup. There are sunscreens designed for oily skin, so there’s no need to worry about that awful greasy feeling. Making life even easier is powdered sunscreen. Not only will it protect you from the sun, but keep you feeling fresh all day and allow for easy reapplications.

Waterproof it all

Seemingly obvious, unless you’re chilling poolside all day you’re going to want to waterproof your makeup. Nobody wants to emerge from their tropical paradise looking like a raccoon. Mascara, eyeliner, foundation, lipstick and eyeshadow all come in waterproof varieties, so there’s no excuse! If you don’t already own waterproof makeup, rather than buying all new cosmetics (although, who doesn’t love new makeup?), invest in a high-quality setting spray.

Opt for a sheer foundation or tinted moisturiser

Heat and moisture from the beach will cause regular foundation to cake and clog your pores. To achieve the natural look, ditch the full-coverage foundation for a lightweight, water-resistant foundation. Better yet, try a BB cream! Your skin tone will be evened out as well as moisturised. Add a little bronzer to really nail the sun-kissed vibe.

Wear a nude lipstick or balm

Red lips are classic, but potentially not what you’re after when going to the beach. A nude shade will give your lips the right amount of colour, without looking too overdone. Remember to be careful: your lips can also get sunburned, and bright red sunburned lips is never fab. Lip balms come in a variety of tints, with many containing an SPH rating of at least 15+, so give these a whirl next time you’re hitting the surf!
