MDW19: Missoni and Alessandra Roveda Create Playful Home with Crochet

MDW19: Missoni and Alessandra Roveda Create Playful Home with Crochet

On via Solferino, Milan, in the Brera Design Disitrict, the Missoni space was transformed into a surreal, playful landscape by Italian artist Alessandra Roveda. A masterful crocheter, Roveda covered furnishings and everyday objects from the past with colorful woolen threads to create a fantastic world, “Home Sweet Home,” that looks more like a dreamscape than a Milan Design Week showroom.

With textures and furnishings, the Missoni space became a habitat for experiencing the sensuality, colors, and softness of knitted materials. Roveda’s vision was to create a nexus between the past and the future; of loved everyday objects of the past becoming fanciful, colorful characters in the present.

Roveda’s completely-manual artistic process articulated the Missoni language of colorful threads and crochet stitching that come to life in a single, pictorial landscape.

A world in which reality becomes a fairytale and imaginatively surreal and playful presences appear and encourage intimate observances and digressions from one’s self, all within the sphere of one’s personal recollections

The artist Alessandra Roveda was a graduate from the Industrial Design program at the Politecnico di Milano. Her artistic language has roots in her childhood and is inspired by her grandmother’s own knitting process. Roveda has exhibited in the Galleria di Paola Colombari, the Salone del Mobile and the Biennale d’arti Applicate in Milan.
