So you’ve finally stepped up your style to something more dapper and classy, but there’s one problem. What do you do with that pocket square? Do you just fold it in half? Is there some fancy origami involved? Are parts of it meant to stick out? Relax, take it easy, and let us guide you through the different ways to fold a pocket square.
The Puff Fold
A versatile method of folding a pocket square, the puff fold is simple and can be played around with to adjust the shape.
1. Lay the pocket square flat
2. Pinch its centre and pick it up
3. Using the thumb and index finger of your opposite hand, form a ring around the pocket square where you have pinched it, and slide your fingers down towards the bottom
4. Fold the pointed edges over.
The Classic Fold
This is probably the look you were imagining when you first got that pocket square, and it’s the simplest way to fold a pocket square.
1. Lay the pocket square flat
2. Fold the left side into the right
3. Fold the bottom half upwards, but not all the way, so that a bit is sticking up from the top
4. Fold the remaining fabric horizontally in thirds so that it fits in your pocket.
The Crown Fold
This is basically the puff fold turned upside down. If you can do that, you can do this. Best of all, the crown fold is deliberately imperfect, so you can play around with the design a little.
1. Lay the pocket square flat
2. Pinch its centre and pick it up
3. Using the thumb and index finger of your opposite hand, form a ring around the pocket square where you have pinched it, and slide your fingers down towards the bottom
4. Rather than folding the pointed edges over, fold the rounded part over.
The Rose Fold
Not all pocket square folds are easy! The rose fold is classy, romantic, and beautiful. Wear this one to a wedding or on a fancy date
1. Make a ring using your thumb and index finger, and place the pocket square over the top
2. Using your other hand, push the pocket square through the ring
3. Grab the fabric you just pushed through the ring with the same hand holding the pocket square
4. Twist the rest of the pocket square clockwise while still holding on to the fabric pressed through the ring
5. Once you’ve got a nice flower shape, hold the fabric down to secure it in place.
