Two designers with two different stylistic visions are featured in an exhibition that celebrates and reinterprets an innovative wood pattern. The exhibition is called Re – Connection.
At the start of the 1980s, Ettore Sottsass collaborated with Vittorio Alpi of ALPI on a new material. Having been familiar with the ALPI wood surfaces for his own designs, Sottsass asked Alpi to create a new one with peculiar striping, like that of a shirt. The result was a new pattern with interesting veining and textures. Later on, Sottsass’s design would become a part of the extensive range of ALPI woods, available in red, orange, brown and grey.
Fast forward to 2017. Martino Gamper creates his own interpretation of the pattern with three exclusive pieces of furniture: a cabinet, a hanging library, and a screen. By cutting, combining and reassembling the wood, Gamper is able to create a different pattern that still maintain’s Sottsass’s original design.
