Raw-Edges Flips Traditional Embroidery on Its Head with Backstitch Rugs

Raw-Edges Flips Traditional Embroidery on Its Head with Backstitch Rugs

No strangers to experimentation, London-based design studio Raw-Edges created a new rug collection for GAN that flips traditional embroidery on its head in celebration of what’s happening on the back. In most things that involve stitching or embroidery, the back of the piece is typically seen as a mess meant to be hidden away. With the Backstitch collection, Raw-Edges proves there’s just as much beauty on the backside with the chaotic embroidery patterns formed when creating something “perfect” on the front. The chaos forms its own design language and purpose that offers a new perspective in the traditional craft.

The Backstitch collection includes three designs – Calm, Busy, and Composition – that evolve from a pattern with expanses of almost solid color to a denser pattern and finally a complex composition with an “explosive” pattern. Along with the three designs, the 100% wool dhurries, which are made on manual looms and embroidered by hand by the GAN Women’s Unit of artisans, are available in two colorways – Green and Brick.
