A 1960’s Warehouse Becomes a Family Home in Melbourne

A 1960’s Warehouse Becomes a Family Home in Melbourne

Zen Architects were hired to turn this 1960’s warehouse in Melbourne into a comfortable family home. One of the main goals of the project was to keep as much of the original building as possible while reusing materials wherever they could. That route is not only cost effective, it’s better for the environment.

In the renovation, they were able to keep the building’s envelope, along with reusing light fittings, sprinkler pipes, doors, cladding, and roof sheeting.

The project included adding a north-facing courtyard which floods the interior with daylight, as well as heat during the winter. Movable shades open up to allow for cross ventilation.

The concrete floor slab was also kept, mostly due to the fact that it would have been too difficult to remove and replace because of the restricted access to the space.

A raised deck unites the courtyard with the open living interior while also adding a natural element to the industrial space.

Suspended rooms within the original open space offer privacy for bedrooms.
