Immigrant Collection: Vessels and Baskets Made Using Rattan

Immigrant Collection: Vessels and Baskets Made Using Rattan

Immigrants landed in the south of Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century as a way to escape the war. They began to work with their hands and created tools to make baskets out of rattan to help with the harvest. As a way to pay respect to her ancestors and the immigrants that arrive every day on foreign soil, Brazilian designer Nicole Tomazi designed The Immigrant Collection, a series of baskets and vessels made of metal and rattan.

The pieces join two unlike materials, metal and rattan, to form brand new things. The metal forms become the structure that the rattan is woven through and around to form the objects. The object then become functional pieces that can be used to hold plants, store gear, or display things.

The collection will be presented during São Paulo Design Week at MADE.
