Block Shop Unveils Collection of Architecturally Inspired Woodblock Prints

Block Shop Unveils Collection of Architecturally Inspired Woodblock Prints

I count myself amongst an already enthusiastic group of fans of the graphical and fashionable handmade textiles of sister-operated Los Angeles based Block Shop. The brainchild of sisters Hopie and Lily Stockman, Block Shop’s catalog of scarves, pillows, linens, and rugs hit a sweet spot, landing somewhere between the hippie-dipped SoCal desert artistry currently popular with the design cognoscenti and an architectural graphical precision identifiable across their oeuvre. Now they’ve transferred this penchant for architectural motifs imprinted onto fabric over onto a new medium – a collection of woodblock prints intended to beautify our walls.

Unveiled and exhibited this week inside the walls of Rachel Comey Los Angeles, each of the six woodblock designs reflect the duo’s affinity for Art Deco detailing found across two continents, specifically those decorating the movie palaces of India and Downtown Los Angeles (the “two far-flung homes” of the Stockman sisters).

Each graphical natural dye woodblock print is faintly bespeckled with texture and color, with deckle edging reflecting their handmade origins, the paper made with the cotton remnants gathered from textile manufacturers.  The same graphical lyricism that made their initial scarf line instantly a favorite is exhibited here in collaboration with Simply Framed.

Prices for these Block Shop Woodblock Prints begin at $250 for the smaller 16”x 20” prints up to $600 for the larger 30”x40” editions. The entire print collection will be available on Block Shop’s website indefinitely and at Rachel Comey’s Melrose location through the fall.
